Jar Herb Garden

If like me you’re just getting started with gardening herbs are the best place to start. Herbs are very high value, extremely easy to grow AND are best consumed immediately because they degrade very quickly after picking.

Most herbs are “mediterranean” meaning that they perform well in bad soil and warm temperatures. The exception to this rule is the popular herb Basil, which likes a richer soil.

Popular Mediterranean herbs tiny gardeners are growing in mason jars include:

  • Basil
  • Chives
  • Cilantro
  • Dill
  • Lavender
  • Lemon Balm
  • Oregano
  • Parsley
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Savory
  • Thyme

When growing in mason jars it’s very important to consider that unless you’ve somehow drilled holes in the bottom of your mason jars (NOT recommended) then you will have to take great care not to overwater your herbs.

In addition, some herbs require much more watering than others – thyme for example, likes a much drier soil than basil. Make sure to observe how your plants behave after watering and study each variety’s watering needs.

Rosemary is one of my personal favorite herbs, I frequently bake bread with fresh chopped rosemary and pepper. One slice will sell you completely on growing your own herbs. What’s your favorite herb? Let us know in the comments.
